- The Glassbead Game, Hesse. A novel/allegory about the life of a scientist (check out http://abebooks.com)
- What color is your parachute? A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers Bolles, 10 Speed Press, any edition after 1985 [at ABEbooks]. Book that helps you know what you want to work on. Do the exercises. My favorite book.

- What they did not teach in you graduate school, 199 helpful hints, Gray & Drew. Read this book now before leaving graduate school. It applies more for PhD than MS, but it applies to all professionals. [2nd Edition]
- Been there done that, hints from undergrads to undergrads (I and II). Book with simple hints on getting work done and doing well at a university
- The structure of scientific revolutions, Kuhn. Book on how science and how science changes gradually and not gradually
- Sciences of the artificial, Simon. Book that has multiple readings possible. I have read it multiple times.

- How to Be a Leader in Your Field: A Guide for Students in Professional Schools (2005) Phil Agre
- Advice for undergraduates considering graduate school A brief how-to, perhaps ten pages, for undergraduates who think they might want to get a PhD. Agre originally wrote it for students in his own department, but over time he have extended it in response to comments from people in other fields. It emphasizes the value of getting involved in research and is especially intended for sophomores and juniors.
I (Ritter) would note that it has advise that also applies to graduate students, assistant professors, and at least associate professors.

- Modeling Behavior Integrated Cognitive Architectures Gluck and Pew's book on comparing architectures. Useful thinking fodder.
- "Testing the null hypothesis and the strategy and tactics of investigating theoretical models". Grant, 1962, on explaining and testing models. My favorite paper.
- Booher and Minniger 1998 chapter on success factors for simulation, and how simulations of people have save the Army millions of $$
- Marr, Vision, get a used copy if you can
- Ritter, Baxter, Jones, & Young, supporting cog models as users, argues for eyes and hands for models
- Psychology of HCI, Card, Moran, & Newell. classic book or classic shorter journal article
- How can the human mind occur in the physical universe? Anderson. Book summarising where ACT-R was in 2007 WRT mapping ACT-R to the brain.

- "The science of scientific writing", Gopen & Swan, 1990. Journal article, useful for some writing problems.
- Bugs in writing. Easy to digest book on tactical writing mistakes to avoid.
- Style, Ten lessons in clarity and grace, Williams. A deep, heavy, thoughtful book on how to write well, explained to me by a German while visiting, Peter Sedlmeier (!).
