Someone put on their survey that they were interested in majoring in IST, but it was full. In some ways, that is, for the freshman class, this is true. For the major itself, this is not true. Here's Stan Supon's response:

Hello Frank ...

One of your IST 110 students mentioned on his student survey that he is
"considering the IST major but it is full."

Here's how I would respond: Some students get confused between admission
to the School of IST and admission to the IST major. The freshman class
in the School of IST at University Park is indeed currently at capacity,
but the 100 or so freshmen currently in the School of IST at UP still
have to compete for admission to the IST major for fall 2001 (i.e., the
fall of their junior year). In fact, *all* students admitted to Penn
State as new freshmen summer 1999 or fall 1999 who complete IST 110,
210, and 220 with grades of C or better by the end of spring 2001 (i.e.,
the spring of their sophomore year) are eligible to compete for
admission to the IST major at UP for fall 2001.

So, the bottom line is: (1) The IST freshman class at UP is currently
full but (2) the IST major is not full.

The Admissions Plan for the School of IST 1999-2000, which outlines both
freshman admission to the School of IST and admission to the IST major
at the beginning of the junior year, can be found online at
http://www.ist.psu.edu/html/pro_admplan.html.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any follow-up questions.

Also, feel free to refer interested students to me to discuss the
admissions plan in more detail. Would it help if I made a guest
appearance in your class to discuss this topic?
